V6 engine whining / grinding :(
Hi
After buying my 1st MG last Friday already discovered a few common things to sort already: 1. Saloon rear lights leaking 2. 3 speed fan (no resistor) low speed not working 3. Now a whining / grinding noise from engine... Any ideas....now how do I insert a YouTube video here ? https://youtu.be/lYuwGzf6kKA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYuwGzf6kKA Help ? |

What brief noise I heard sounded like a dry bearing in the auxiliary belt train. Tensioner maybe? A longer clip would help I think and by moving the camera around more slowly to the various locations in the train.

Last couple of second is the noise when fan kicked in ..
https://youtu.be/iL_QdFg4R_g 3 belts + water pump was replaced about 10k ago. But the aux belt was noticed by Phil-T4 to be incorrectly fitted when he serviced it 4k ago and he refitted it correctly afterwards. Last edited by Wayne2015; 15th July 2015 at 19:44.. |

Wayne, Is your battery light still on, because it sounds similar to alternator bearing wine. Get a very long screwdriver and place it on top on the alternator, and the other end to your ear.
Otherwise, your video seems to show noise coming from cam cover side could be the tensioner, hope its not. You can slip off the auxiliary belt, if noise stops, then you know its on the auxiliary drive. If you still have the noise, then its within the cam cover gubbins. My auxiliary idler pulley bearing is noisy on mine, but yours sounds different, louder with a higher pitch, makes me think its alternator bearing. Last edited by Dallas; 15th July 2015 at 19:57.. |

Is the noise there as soon as you start the car, or does the noise start when engine warms up?
