Opacity is the degree to which smoke blocks light, and the basis for measuring the amount of smoke coming from a diesel-powered vehicle. Poorly maintained or malfunctioning engines are sometimes the cause of excessive smoke.

Hi Jules. It is something to do with the smoke emitted. Opacity is the ability to either ‘see through’ it or not. I think it is a measurement of the smoke that comes with the accelerator being pushed to the floor and whether the opacity (thickness’ of the smoke) is within a certain limit. This is really all guesswork, but opacity is the ability to see through whatever you are looking at like water that is dirty, bonfire smoke and the like.

If you look on your info plate inside the door you will see a figure in a box lower left that is the maximum allowed in the smoke test difference between that and MOT figure shows how clean or not. No figure in box then limits are non turbo 2.5 turbo 3.0
