Auto box problem
My cdti has developed a jerk when changing gears. It all started yesterday after a 20 mile run down the motorway, in which all was well until l left the motorway and got into traffic. This was when the jerking began. Did the same on the way back. I took it for a short run this morning, smooth as silk. Then after 15 minutes started again. It seems to only happen when it gets warm. It does it when l put it in drive, and through all gears, but third seems the most violent. Could this be the fluid thinning out when hot? Is it safe to use on short journeys? Trouble is l will have wait until new year now before l can get it seems to. Or change the fluid myself. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi Ray,
You need to get your multimeter out and test the solenoids, not a difficult job to do and with this type of fault it is usually the 2/4 brake solenoid that has failed. I think DMGRS has these for sale and they are not too difficult to change. There is a how to on here showing how to test the solenoids and I believe there is also one on how to change the solenoid. Thanks Dave. Do the selonoids only fail when hot, as all works well when cold. I will read the how tos then l know wether it is within my capabilities. Ray

Just been to my allotment 1•5 miles away. The jolting started straight away when cold, but came back when warm nice and smooth. Also got a pm from Astraeus recommending rear engine mount check. Which l presume is the gearbox mount, this could also be the cause of my idling vibration. I have looked at the how to section and this is for the petrol 1.8. Is this a similar to the diesel auto, if so l think l will try taking the mount off to inspect for wear, which l presume it will have after 105,000 miles. Any tips would be much appreciated. Cheers Ray.

It could be the lower engine restraint but the jerking doesn't normally go away on its own.
Have you noticed the letters---EP--- come up on the lower instrument panel indicating an automatic gearbox fault ?? |

I replaced the lower mount earlier in the year so that can be eliminated. Have been a couple of miles this morning, all nice and smooth again. This is what baffles me, if it was mountings surely it would do it all the time. I am going to have to check the selonoids plug with a multimeter, but will have to have crash course on how. I haven't noticed the EP sign on, but will definitely keep an eye out for it now. Need to sort it before using it does damage to innards.

Do not rule out the lower engine mount, depending on what type you used and where from they can fail if not good quality ? worth checking it.

Got it from Matt drmgs. About 6months ago, checked it last month seemed ok. Only do about 4000 miles per year nowadays so things should last longer. Still if that had gone pear shaped would the jolting be on and off??

If your mounting has gone to town
the engine will leap up and down. It just won't stop and go away to have it return another day. The only thing that you can do is chuck it out and start anew. So give it one last inspection and chuck it in the suppliers direction. ( If it's ded ) Then sort those solenoids out.--- Last edited by COLVERT; 23rd December 2018 at 18:40.. |
