Default Heated seats question

Hi guys, I need your help with 3 questions relating to the heated seats.

1. what normally causes the failure of a heated seat? in my case the drivers.

2. what is the best fix?

3. (....and this relates to 2 worn out leather connie seat I have spare) are the heated seats just heater mats, an electrical feed and a switch, or is there more to it than that? I'd like to take the heater pads and switches from my scapper 75 and put them in my Celica seats. I'm a time served upholsterer so I'm ok with that part of the job.

Looking forward to any help

Its usually the thermostat inside the seat that causes the failure, like you said the seats contain heat pads, have you checked the fuses?

Not checked anything yet Trikey, but the drivers side never worked in all the 40k miles I drove it: the passenger side did though.

I've also seen that the element can be broken

Heated seats are switched on the negative side. So, with ign on if you can pin the wires that come out of the seat and show 12v then the element is OK

On mine, the element broke where it passes between the seats central panel and the front external panel. Beneath the inverted "U" of the central seat panel is a thick wire which the upholsterer uses to secure the leather top cover. I found the element crossed this wire to get into the outer front and side panels. The slight movement of sitting on the seat resulted in the rubbing of the element on this wire, ending with it broken.

Richard 17865, the former NW Group Secretary, has entered in the "How to's"
the fitting of a replacement seat element made by a company called Waeco. This can warm up your middle seat panel only, with low and high settings to a higher setting than the original, but I miss the side panel heating as well. I still have the original element on it's cloth backing and am thinking of re installing it into my seat, extending the two ends of the element's break out of the way of the upholstery to join them up with no superheating that a direct connection would cause.
