54 ZT CDT saloon front Droplinks keep breaking
Hi All, thanks for looking
As per the title, my front droplinks keep breaking. Third pair just gone this year. Now yes, I live in B'ham, AKA Speed Bump City Arizona and the roads are poorly maintained, but I drive granny slow over humps and avoid the pot holes. Now I had an E46 before, which come with equally sensitive suspension, but it would never break a drop link. Sre it would wear Bushes out like crazy, but not Drop links. This many DLs failing feels odd. But Is it? Are they, like my shoulders, a stress-concentration point? If it is, is there anything I can do? I've changed the suspension set up from the supplied sport to 'comfort' stuff, hoping this would reduce stresses, but maybe it hasn't. Are there stronger links out there? I've gotten my previous ones from various suppliers known to this club and one other, but all of them have broken. Any thoughts appreciated. Many thanks, Paul. When you say the links are 'breaking', do you mean the steel link is actually fracturing or are the ball joints wearing too rapidly?

I have only ever seen one drop link break clean off, and that was due to a dead damper, are your front shocks ok?

Seen a few new aftermarket drop links that have a couple of spot welds holding the rod to the ball joints.
If yours are the same it's the probable reason for them breaking if your shocks are ok I've not heard of the original or good quality ones breaking. Russ

@T-cut: Yes that's a very good point, it is the ball joints wearing too rapidly. Thanks for the question

Where are you getting them from? Maybe worth paying a bit more to get some genuine ones.
I've had a couple of cheap pairs from eBay in the past, unless you get lucky they don't seem to last long. I fitted some from DMGRS about a year ago and have had no problems since.

Meyle are supposed to be good. Always peel back the rubber covers and put some grease in them. I use Castrol CL grease. Sticks like the proverbial to all surfaces.

Hopefully sorted :-)
Hi All.
I appreciate everyone's input. I've bought an MG7 one from DGMRS but the link to the longbridge ones is very useful. Might get one in stock anyway, for when the OTHER side fails Ta again all!!! |
