yep what he said.
Do this on My TF before flushing coolant. You need to be sure to get all the detergent out so maybe refill the system at least once with water and run to temp then flush again. |

Indeed. Dishwasher tablets are basically sodium metasilicate which is very alkaline. Aluminium readily dissolves in alkaline solutions, so to avoid etching the head and block, make sure the stuff is completely gone. What's wrong with a specially formulated cooling system flush? Home brew remedies might be cheap, but often come with hidden baggage. TC |

Just done this on a KV6 by using a couple of dishwasher tablets.
I certainly wouldn't leave them in for a few days, just bring it up to temperature and leave it running for about half an hour. Then flush the system with plain water and again bring it up to temperature again, repeat at least once more and then flush the system until any discolouration disappears and the water runs clear. Only then refill and bleed the system of air with the coolant mixture of your choice. Russ

A simple coolant renewal only requires a fresh water/hosepipe type flush. If the recommended antifreeze mix has been used and remains in normal condition and visually transparent, the system won't need any home brew or proprietary flushing agent. If the old coolant is cloudy, or badly discoloured/rusty looking, something more aggressive might be needed to loosen any detritis. Oil emulsification from head gasket failure is a different kettle of fish and needs a powerful, proprietary detergent formula (like the Holts product). So, it really depends on what you've got to replace. TC |
