Frozen out.....
Went out to the car this morning to defrost ready for the school run, not thick frost but it was frozen solid (-2) As my key fob doesn't work I have to use the key... I couldn't even get it in the lock..... went indoors got some warm water and poured it over the outside of the handle/lock trying not to get any inside..... so got key in but would not turn in lock cue bit more hot water...... so now in car and she turns over first time... engine warming up... so now opens rear door to get seat ready for school run... door won't shut... cue little warm warm water.... took 10 minutes to get it to shut.... So now car totally defrosted ready for school run.
Have been out to check doors/locks and they all work fine but temperature is just above freezing.... and its going to be cold again tonight....

Don’t think water in the locks is going to do them any good in this cold weather.

Same here
I've had this same problem last Wednesday. Back doors wouldn't close, used warm water on the locks. Ordered a portable hairdryer to keep in the glovebox.
Had to manually lock the car to park it. Now the passenger rear door is jammed permeantly shut. Will have to take of the door card & investigate. Central locking etc all working as normal & the door shows as closed on my dash alert icon so it's driveable. |

I suppose this is the type of weather when you should use WD40 for its correct use (W.D.= Water Dispersant)
The trick will be how to get it into the workings of the locks which is where the water freezes .....

I always use W.D. On the locks including boot.On the locks on the garage I use Waxoyle, which has been thinned down in a bucket of hot water and sprayed into the lock. Never have any problems.

Always a bit wary about squirting any kind of liquid/spray into locks in case the electrics come out on strike..

I don't know if it would be advisable to do this with our fancy car keys, but on my older cars I would heat the key up with a lighter, that always worked.
