Default Have I fried my sunroof motor!!

Whilst trying to turn off the interior light this morning whilst the car was frozen under 2in of snow, I accidently knocked the sunroof button, which moved down slightly at the rear then stopped. Being frozen, it wouldnt move further but after a while there was a strange smell like pipe smoke. The sunroof doesnt move at all now its defrosted and I am fearing the worst!! I also need to tape it over before the rain comes over the weekend. If pooped, can these motors be changed easily??

You should be able to manually wind it closed.

The fuse should pop to protect the motor.

Thanks, this sounds great but how do i do this? Is there access behind the roof lamp cluster??

Yes you will then see the motor, with a recess for an allen key to wind the roof closed.

I did exactly the same thing to mine last winter, you can manually shut it using an allen key .The motor is just a few screws to remove but i found that mine had completely melted the plastic end moulding holding the brushes and havent got around to replacing it yet.The fuse fitted is obviously to large for the motor and should have been a suitably rated thermal oveload to protect the motor but allow current surge on startup.

I'm afraid you normally can't manually close it by using the Allen key recess as it's a worm gear acting on a bevelled toothed cog.

The only way to close it manually is to remove the motor from the housing then use an Allen key in the recess

After trying to manually close the sunroof, gave up as it wouldnt move. Removed the whole motor (which was very easy) and tried to apply 12v indoors but deffo burnt out. replacement ordered and slight gap temporarily taped up!! Can these motors be serviced at all?? (to be used as a spare)

I managed to close the sunroof by removing the motor assembly and taking off the motor and replacing the fitting, minus the case so that i could turn the large cog inside to close the sunroof. Looking at the photo, the brush end of the motor is well burnt and so is now in the bin!

Well, the replacement motor has turned up but is still blowing the 20A fuse. i have read other posts that list the sunroof fuse as 30A, so is mine too small a value and could i change it for a 25 or 30A? Thanks for reading.
