Cars today are getting much more reliable than in the past. So much so it's very hard to get a poor deal. The vetting by the auction companies on current sales is very comprehensive with a detailed report pasted on the car screen for all to see.
As a private buyer you will easily outbid any dealer.

The car mentioned in this post was most likely picked up by a dealer at auction for anything up to £3,000 below their asking price. Sometimes more. There's a glut of used cars in Britain today and it's a buyers market.

For £10,000 there is no need to buy a car with more than 30,000 miles on the clock. One owner.

Maybe a bit of cosmetic attention and then sold straight on.---( General dealers expectation.)

Great advice there and thanks for it. I will definitely go for an ex fleet auction car. Volvo V60 or Seat Leon estates current favourites. Just need to find a decent auction house in the west midlands now.

I've had a few cars along side my own ZT-T, 75 and ZT190:
- Mazda 3 MPS (280BHP) - 90,000 miles when bought
- Mazda 3 MPS (380BHP, brown trousers edition) - 80,000 miles when bought
- BMW 330d (fantastic car!) - 275,000 miles when bought
- 2009 VW Phaeton (had some issues, complicated and expensive to fix) - 85,000 miles when bought
- 2006 VW Phaeton (because I don't learn from my mistakes! Bargain basement, and has behaved so far...) - 139,000 miles when bought

I quite like the idea of a BMW 335d or a 530d of the 2005-2010 era. Badge reputation aside, they're genuinely very nice cars.

I'd give a V70 a go, as I really regret selling the one I had! Not spectacularly exciting but incredibly comfortable and reliable!
Don't buy an XF, tempting as the prices are! Mine has been atrocious; worst car I've ever owned, and the dealer is appalling!

Glad the gold tourer has given good service, was always a nice solid car! I'd also give a Skoda Octavia estate a look, or perhaps a Superb if you want something huge!

Volvo definitely, reliable extremely well designed and very easy to work on.
The S60 and V70's are solid, don't rust and the diesels are very economical for a 2.4
All original parts are available and are good quality.

Hi,

Alongside the "reliability index" it may be worth having a look at the DEKRA report: https://www.used-car-report.com/en/

Our sons are in Newcastle so we're regularly up & down from Tamworth to them.

The Rover is the most comfortable car I've done the journey in.

Been in a Vectra for good distances and that's nowhere near as comfortable. The Honda's I've been in seem very hard.

I've just done the journey in a 10 year old 120K 1.9 TDi Passat and that was pretty good. The cruise is much better than the Rover's and the comfort is not far off.

Oddly enough I've recently been in a SEAT Exeo and found it to be a really nice car - unfortunately not an estate though.

Skoda Superb estates seem to have good reviews.

I believe the VAG emission mess can be easily sorted buy a session on a well run rolling road. I think VW etc. garages are not allowed to put the engines back to their "original" (naughty!) spec which is causing all sorts of issues.

Definitely have a decently long test drive if comfort is high on your needs. Many "newer" cars seem to have "sporty" suspension and super low profile tyres adding to the hard ride (BMW M Sport - not an actual "M3/5" car - being truly horrible).

Hope that helps a bit.

Good luck with your search.

Andy.

I sugest you should explore the Volvo route - they are decent cars, comfortable enough and more modern and actually better to drive than any 75/MG. People here will tell you otherwise but a lot won't have driven a more modern car

Won't have 'wood' though

I will however stick up for Mazda, you can buy petrol ones and they, like many other Japanese cars, just don't break - and are actually fun to drive.

I looked at 6 Octavia's from 10 - 8 years old before I bought the Mazda and they all had/had repaired problems with rusty sill's behind the front wheels I fretted about the Mazda because it was 'only' a 2.0 petrol engine without a turbo but actually it never feels slow and it handles rater well for a family sized hatchback and it made my fathers Golf estate look tiny when we we were trying to fit things in cars.

Another vote for a petrol mazda, although the diesels are iffy their petrols aren't. My brother's got one, he's put 80k on one with very few problems.

Hi there, yes she's been great thanks, barring one niggle, which Jules over in Conwy got me through. She's got a few more scratches than when I bought her from you but with a new back box, goes really well. I will stick with an auto in future. Always had my left foot perched over the clutch for some reason.

Being a career teacher it might be that the pull of the Volvo is going to prove too strong. The car equivalent of old Bilbo shuffling off to the Grey Havens. I know you have to some epic runs north so the vote for the V70 is good to hear.

Oh yes they do, it was an option on the S60 and V70's

Well there you go then I must admit I'm over the 'wood' thing personally but if you want a more modern car with it there you are
