Check battery contacts as well. You need to make sure the connections are firmly pushed on as far as they go. Don't leave a little gap between the connector and the post bottom. I had this and thought the connectors were duff as they were not tight enough.

I've just (last night) refurbed my starter motor (as mentioned above) as the contacts were well worn and I got exactly this. Did all the checks above, just in case.

Started great until a week ago then failed to start one day.

All dash lights / stereo OK but when you turn the key to start - just a click. Works fine now after new contacts and "plunger".

Sounds to me like your starter motor. This makes a single click, too. A gentle tap on the starter motor may get it going. There’s a repair kit available on eBay which sorts it out permanently.

Yep, headlights coming on is an indication of insufficient battery power. As stated by others modern batteries don't fade slowly as they used to, they just die.

When I have had a low battery on a 75, the relays have chattered when trying to start, making a right din.

Okay...so now I am just a little bit worried. I came to take the battery off and the connections were loose! A-ha methinks, could this be it? I tried to tighten them, but they won't budge. One I can't move, the other I did manage to, but it simply won't tighten enough over the pole.

Okay, not much I can do about that tonight, so I removed the battery and stuck it on my charger...its not a tester, but it is showing the battery is full, and the thing sparks too. I know it still could technically be duff, and I won't know for sure until tomorrow, but I am seriously thinking I could have another issue.

I dare not try starting it again now until I have a new battery to try, I've had three attempts and don't want to duff the key on top.

If it is not the battery, where is the starter/connectors, how do I get to them? The car has its tray fitted, so I am thinking in the dark it won't be easy. I am away at the weekend, and the Toyota has the dreaded MOT next week, so I really need to get this going!
