At least at the moment if the power goes out we are still able to get from one place to another.
In reality, in the future, he who controls power generation will have total control over the whole population and what they do, banking, their movement etc.
Not hard to see how easy it would be to bring civilization to a grinding halt!!!
You've watched the Mad Max films once too often

I suspect eating you will probably be a better option, followed by burning whatever cannot be eaten. Society will need to make optimum use of natural resources.

Diesels will of been naturally phased out by then anyway, it’s ridiculous what manufacturers are having to do to get them to run clean. Petrols are achieving diesel mpg figures and are easier to get to run cleanly. I do believe that battery and hybrids are the future, a clean petrol engine that charges the battery for an electric motor, a hydrogen fuel cell or full battery. Hyundai have launched an electric Kona that has a 300 mile range if you want to go full electric and have a hydrogen fuel cell NEXO launched next year. You local tech now has to be a tech, electrician and chemist all in one if you don’t have access to a charge point then hybrid is the answer.

The last sold ordered 75 Tourer. Paid for by the Phoenix Four and handed over by John Towers to the Warwickshire Northampton Air ambulance service as a Rapid Response vehicle

When I see them shutting down airports instead of building them I'll start to worry about my fossil fuel motor.

And, as all our power stations are owned by foreign companies, we've sold the national grid to the Chinese and the latest plan is to import electricity from Norway & France by under-sea cables, we will be entirely reliant on foreigners for power.
In the seventies they used to talk about petrol running out in 20 years. We are well past that. Electricity has lots of problems as an alternative and it might be that we are actually going to go back to a Victorian style of life where we don't have cheap personal transport available to everyone. Perhaps this 100 years will be looked back on as brief a blip in thousands of years of walking everywhere.
Think I might invest in a horse....
