Thanks for the speedy answer. I guess in reality it could be either way, open or closed) depending on how the VIS is left after bench test as well. One other thing I assumed also was that during reassembly the cam position on the gear didn't matter because once it was powered once it would be in one of the correct positions yes?

On the balance vis the cam needs to be positioned between the two switches. If you look on the back of the vis motor just where the drive cog fits through you will see a raised arc that travels through 90 degrees. If you look closer on the drive shaft recess you will see a small indented arrow head. this should always be within the arc

A quick visual check of a balance vis is when you remove it: A working one will always have the flap fully open and the arrow will be to the left of the arc when looked at

Final tip, if you use 12v to test a balance vis that is not connected to the flap it is possible ( but not always) that it just continues to go round and round and not in a smooth action, makes you think something is broken but fact is the flap acts to stop the inertia from the motor allowing it to overrun

Doggone it! I'll have to get this checked again before being refitted and I've already sent the back with me Dad. Better know now than later though.
