Comes from Per Ardua Ad Astra - the motto of my employer and translates as "Through adversity to the stars", although some say "through struggle to the stars".

mine dates back a few years, to the first computer forum i signed up to, was stuck for a user name , and had just been playing a new flight sim game called comanche gold ,so used that. have used variations of comanche an a number of sites around the web ever since.
