Get the OBD up with the coolant temperature and drive the car hard. You should see the temperature rise and then drop as the thermostat opens.
I have changed my in line thermostat to 92 degree version but if I am pottering around it never gets to this temperature - more like 85 degrees.
Driven hard it gets to 92+ and then drops rapidly
Do you have a link for the 92° stat please?

I do not have the Renault 5 thermostat but the Specialist Components in line thermostat assembly.
The 92 degree stat is FTS104.92
They were fitted with 88 degree stats (FTS104.88) but mine started opening at lower temperatures and needed changing, so as advised by SC I fitted the 92 degree stat.

Ah right OK. My gates is now starting to open earlier and earlier...I tried a valeo but that let's the temp drop below 75° when going down hills so I refitted the gates the temp then fluctuates from 80 to 83°. Way too low for my liking.

Sounds like your in-line stat has a leak. It is not shutting the water off but letting it leak past.---

That would very much surprise me if it leaks past, because it is a very tight & snug fit.

Still not getting higher than 57 degrees, after bleeding the coolant circuit

So can't be an airlock ...

Stupid question but you did fit it the right way round ?

And don't rule out a faulty new thermostat

Yes I put it the right way in, like on the video on Youtube.

I can of course edgily remove it (I hope to get it out again) and test it in warm water, right ?

I removed the new inline thermostat : all was tight fit, etc, so I took it and filled the "backside" with water under the tap : and its liking like crazy !

I suppose it should only get open at 88 degrees. Its not fully open, but definitely leaking quite badly !

And it's a brand new thermostat ?!

COLVERT and sewerman : thanks of the tip ! I will get a new thermostat next week

It doesn't take much of a leak to seriously reduce the effectiveness of the thermostat. Remember hat you are seeing is a leak it out pressure. Think how much water I'll squeeze through once the system is pressurised!
