These are two must-have items for anyone thinking of working on the CDT alternator.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Telescopi...kAAOSwsYpaBYM2 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAGNETIC-...gAAOSwez5Z004y Plus a set of long 1/4 inch extensions and a universal joint for the socket set. I also found a credit-card size digital camera really handy for reading the manufacturer data off the alternator label. Last edited by MSS; 14th January 2018 at 17:43.. |

There would have been a changeover date at some point, but I believe that the two types are interchangeable (somebody correct me if I am wrong), and as it is an old car it could have either type fitted now.

Yes, apparently the complete alternators are interchangeable, but the regulators for the alternators are not interchangeable, you have to get the 2 pin or 3 pin type, depending on the model of alternator. Anyway: Done it! I went down to Midhurst, armed with a charged battery & two regulators, 2 and 3 pin. My early~ish car (2000 on a'W') turns out to have the 3 pin type regulator, despite the connection plug (from the car's loom) being two pin. It seems to be the original alternator too. It was easier to swap the regulator than I thought it would be. The tiny brass screws were a pain to get out, as someone decided that a BIG dollop of gloop to cover them up was necessary. (Recon that's to stop shorting between the brass screws as the carbon bushes wear down as dust?). Both bushes on the old regulator were very worn, to the extent that one was hardly making any contact with the slipping. Charging light out & the car drove back 80 odd miles like a champ. Thanks to all for the pointers & suggestions! (Especially the extended magnet thing!).
