mg-zt 2.0 cdti 54 plate: won't start.
twice now she has refused to start, just turns over but no sighn of firing up. first time was in tesco's carpark in hucknall(where i live), left it ten min's tried it and fired up like nothing wrong. second time i was at my mums and it wouldn't start at no price,my dad gave me a tow and still nothing so i called rac, he arrived after about 1 1/2 hours and it started first time for him, he said it might be something to do with the chip in the key so i set off home, anyway all seemed fine, tramming nicely up M1 between trowol services and J 26 in the roadworks (where i get off) it cut out dead, i managed to coast into one of those extra pullins theyv'e put in, called rac again, he was there within 1/2 hour, he tried it and it started so he followed me home and plugged his computer in and it came up with 2 codes he had no info for, he said it wasn't the engine but a dealer thing, has anyone had anything similar or know where i might be able to get it sorted in the hucknall, nottingham area, am very grateful for any advice: pete.

Hi and welcome.
This is quite a common fault and is down t the Camshaft sensor. It is needed for starting but okay once engine is going. When it gets hot it sometimes goes wrong. Because the time between the RAC coming and the breakdown it had cooled. Do a search for cam sensor to see pictures and loads of threads. Hope that helps. Merry Christmas John |

From info you give, it sounds like a warm starting issue. This is very common and usually caused by a duff camshaft sensor. They are magnetised and lose it when warm. They'll often allow starting when cooled back down.
For more info do searches for "cam sensor" (with quotes). Loads of stuff and part numbers, sources, prices, etc. Try eBay to start. If it's not the sensor, someone into diesels will be along to help soon. TC EDIT: Evansabove, snap! |
