It's possible to fit a MK1 bumper and headlights and make it look like a MK1 from the front, certainly

It's not as unusual as you might think. There are Rovers and MGs not 40 mile from me that are still in garage waiting for their first owner. Not imports, original UK cars stuck in dealers waiting to be bought. DVLA insisted they be registered in 2008 otherwise you could have bought an unused car on a current plate eg 14plate, - now that would be different!
