Default Netflix help

After becoming quite disgruntled with Sky tv I have just cancelled my movie and sport channels. My son and daughter have Netflix in their rooms via their xbox's so I'm looking to add to my Netflix subscription for a third device. I don't have a smart tv but my sons xbox one is connected to the tv and is a possibillity but I'd rather not go this route if possible. Looking online it looks like I can stream Netflix via a number of ways and the two most common seem to be via Roku or Apple tv. Does anybody use these options and can offer any advice?
Thanks

I don't use netflix, so I can't offer any advice to your specific question.

However, I would encourage you to investigate the use of android tv via Kodi.

Admittedly there is plenty of illegal or unethical content available (ie free access to Sky Sports and various other Sky premium channels), but there is also plenty of content available that is both legal and ethical. To a large extent it depends on how your moral compass is set.

You should be able to load Kodi onto your pc, have a look to see if it is of interest to you, and then buy an android box (which will turn your tv into a "smart" tv) if you are comfortable with the legal and moral implications of what you will have access to.

By illegal/unethical you mean that it's on the Internet? There's loads of 'illegal' (depending on your geographical location and the jurisdiction it falls under) content available on the Internet. I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say 'unethical', it's not a term I've seen applied to 'content' before, only actions. Kodi no more enables access to illegal content than Internet Explorer does on your PC. Kodi is just a Home theatre application that will play whatever media you have: how you get it is up to you.

I don't think that there's currently a working Netflix app for android (but I could be wrong).

I either use Netflix on my laptop, or use the Nintendo wii to play it on the big telly. I can't get a working Netflix on Kodi running on the RPi yet .

If you're getting something for free, that you know you should be paying for, whilst it may not be illegal to view it, some people may class it as unethical....... hence why I said it depends upon your moral compass.

Netflix is available on my android box, however I haven't viewed it as why would I want to pay for something that I can get for free elsewhere. My moral compass fluctuates

I have Netflix. I think it's great, working my way through box sets and there's more than I will ever be able to watch! It's only a fiver a month after the first month and that's free. No sport like Sky Sports but that doesn't bother me one jot.

Still not quite sure how you equate using Kodi to getting something for free? (apart from Kodi itself, which of course, is free) Kodi itself does nothing of the sort, and the team that produce Kodi don't sanction copyright theft/infringement in any way. The fact that Kodi may be used to view copyrighted content without payment is another matter, but just about anything that plays any media is capable of that.

I use Kodi to view material from my own libraries, and I have netflix to stream movies and tv shows. Used to have Lovefilm but since Amazon took it over, well...: and the streaming side was never any good anyway.

I have a Roku that I use for Netflix. It cost about £40 from Amazon (I think). I am extremely picky and pedantic (AKA old and grumpy) but it genuinely has the best designed and easiest setup of any similar product I've used.

In my case, my telly has an HDMI socket on the back, so plugged the Roku into that, and plugged its little power unit into the mains and followed the steps on screen to connect to my Wi-Fi - and touch wood it's been working fine for a year or so at least. I set up profiles for me and my daughter and we can watch the stuff we like.

Very occasionally (2-3 times in a year) I've had to "reboot" it when it froze.

The remote is useful and it unlike some TV ones it doesn't need to be pointed at the TV/Roku.

Added bonus of the Roku is C4, ITV C5 and BBC iplayer are all available on it for catchup services, as well as Netflix. Other paid for and free services are on there, but I haven't found any others I really liked.

All in all a great little thing, and bought with savings from giving up live TV and therefore not needing a TV licence any longer.

Oh - and Netflix works find on my Android tablet (Samsung) using Chrome - I don't know if there's an app as I haven't needed one.

A lot of people don't know that you do not need a TV licence if you only watch catchup or pre-recorded programmes, even if you pay for sky or virgin it doesn't mean you watch live TV.
Saves £12 a month 👍
