Default Re Renault 5 mod on diesel75 issue ! "Help"

Hi all and hello,

Came hm tonight and next door was finishing off temp/hot heater mod or so called Renault mod.

After saying good evening he called me over. I've done this and it's not working ? Top pipe off inserted thermostat in with pointy bit facing engine 10cm done as its stated on here. Followed it off you tube looked no leaks topped up how do you bleed it ? I've had it running for 1/2 hr and temp needle still at 7 o'clock and bottom rad pipe not warm top pipe in to rad hotish from block ? What shall I do ? So I'm asking here the fountain of knowledge :-)

Any ideas or thoughts on this seams strange that it's still doing the same with extra what you would say was blockage or even pressure to send it hotter. Could it be air locked ?

All replies will be very helpful

Did you/he (?) read the recent thread about leakage through some R5 stats? If there's the smallest coolant leak past the closed valve, the results are very disappointing. One R5 stat known to be OK is made by FirstLine.

Go for a drive, with the OBD display on. I havent tried idling for that long. I would suspect it is getting there, but takes longer to reach temp. As long as you are satisfied there are no leaks, drive for maybe 10 miles, trying to get the engine under load.

I will find the link, but the lower pipe should be cool. It is the coolant that has passed through the cooling fins of the rad.

The M47R engine is so thermally efficient, idling for half an hour will not bring it up to temperature.
At very least it would need to be revved pretty hard for a time. Using the OBD, as suggested by Alan, whilst revving, you should see the temperature rise to 88-89 deg, then as the stat opens, will drop, then cycle up and down.

Alan has become "Jedi Master" on all things R5 stat!

LOL, I wouldnt go that far at all, more like Jedi student, well probably more like Jedi tea boy. to the real Jedi masters such as ...... well everyone else who participated in this thread. lol

(WARNING to mgzrjake: that is an epic thread, full of posts of me going around in circles, and largely unimportant comments and failed theories lol)

I plan to (briefly!) update with my impressions after a couple of months running.

No one has asked how much coolant he lost and how much he replaced.

That is a good point, however the amount normally lost is generally minimal. The coolant around the temp sensor should still rise though.

Still, just idling with no load on the engine for half an hour from cold, with one of these engines is unlikely to raise the temp enough to make any kind of observation.
