Default Anyone ever taken the lumbar support apart?

My drivers lumbar support does not seem to be working, turn it and nothing happens, anyone ever seen one taken apart?
Wondering if it's an easy fix, if it involves removing leather seat covers I don't think I'll bother

Hi matey, yes it would involve removing the seat covers but that is not as bad a job as many on our cars!

Not really afraid of the task, more worried about ripping the leather, or it not sitting as well when I try to put it back, any ideas how that mechanism works?

Hi,

You don't need to remove the covers. The seat's back panel can be removed by springing off the tangs, two either side, near the top and bottom. Do one side at both ends and the other side should come away easily.

Once removed, you will see the lumbar panel and the cable that does the tensioning. I was replacing a seat back heating element, and tried to get the whole cover off but the lumbar adjustor just would not come away from it's spindle. It's supposed to be just a push-on fit but I could not release it.

You should be able to fix the lumbar problem without having to remove the adjustor.

Best of luck

Hi again,

Just found the "How to".

It's on this Forum, in the "How to's" second page 13 May 2010 from Devilish headed "Remove seat back panel". Here you can see the four fixing tangs. Don't press too hard, they easily break off.

the backing tangs are only on the mk1's i believe - no backing board on the mk2's seats. a cheaper seat, but easier to work on. yes the backing board is a pain to work on and be patient so you don't break the plastic. you need a long screwdriver with a decent sized blade.
the lumbar support is just a cable that pulls in the back support more taut.
