LL versus mobile contracts
I'm presently with Plusnet for fibre over copper broadband, paying an extra £8 pm for free anytime calls limited to 1 hour, plus 2000 minutes to mobile numbers.
For years I have made do with topping up my mobile number as I rarely use it except for emergencies. £10 topup lasts for years. So recently bought a new Iphone and the credit rapidly disappears if I use it for data. I buy a separate data sim for whilst away in the caravan, just for Internet. Plusnet offer 3Gb, unlimited, unlimited mobile for £7 pm for existing customers, which is much more than I would normally need. I'm just waiting for that to be activated, then.... I asked and Plusnet say I can drop the £8 anytime calls from my LL package, making me £1 better off, yet I would still be able to make (chargeable) and receive calls on the LL. It all sounds just too good to be true. Mobile use cheaper than LL, yet with 3gb thrown in. The 3gb will more than take care of my times away in the caravan, using the phone for tethering. Am I missing a gotcha or something?

That is the case. We also do not have a calls package on the home LL as all of us have a mobile. The LL is there primarily for Broadband data.
Data is now the primary traffic on consumer landlines and mobiles - relatively little voice traffic is generated by most people. Hence the pricing. |

I wish I had known sooner, I well knew that lots of people didn't bother with a landline, but put that down to convenience of just always using a mobile for everything. My mobile switch is supposed to happen sometime today, once that is working and I'm satisfied, I will have the calls package taken off.

I know where the data went, I gave the satnav function a try, so it was downloading maps as I drove. I will look for the background data setting. The new sim contract was activated today, on a temporary number - my old number is scheduled to be ported across tomorrow.
