Nice one, if you bought the car, why did the breaker retain the number plates then?

Ignore me, just realised the pictured boot isn't this car.

Ok, will do my best to answer the queries:

Firstly, the sat nav drive is on the right of the boot, but from memory (car not nearby) it's behind a removable panel that clips out to allow disc insertion, rather than fitted through a piece of trim as in your pics, Reebs. Will get back to you on this in due course.

Neither the tray liner or lid are present.

Roverbarmy - at the moment I just have the car and a receipt to say sold as scrap, there is no logbook (as yet) and the service history does not show owners. If I can get it re-registered, I'll apply for a history check from DVLA which will show all previous keepers, but they won't give you the info until it's registered in my name - which might take a while. Good idea though

As far as the number plates, they were on it originally (as per photo). However, they started asking about why I wanted the car, where I was going to keep it, the fact I musn't drive it, etc. (quite responsible really).

Once I'd agreed to buy it, they said that because it was registered as having been scrapped, they'd have to remove & break up the no-plates, smash the windscreen to distroy the VIN plate and (his exact words...)punch a stake through the stamped body chassis no !!!!

So not much I could do if I wanted the car (either way, it was coming home with me), but I asked them not to smash the windscreen as this was something I wanted and I asked them very politely to do as little damage as possible. I then left to get the Land Rover and transporter, when I got back, all he'd done was remove the plates

Cheers Ratty, I probably shouldn't off but just couldn't resist !!

An amazing find - well done to you for spotting it, Sir.

When all the original parts are reinstated I wouldn't be surprised if any museums were interested in it, being the very first mass produced Tourer.

Whatever your plans are for it, I hope the DVLA look upon it favourably.

Incredible isn't it? Here we have a perfectly good car which the previous owner just didn't want anymore. There's nothing wrong with it, yet "the system" wants to destroy it. Why can't Sonic ZS buy it just like any other second-hand car?

The politicians are always lecturing us about the environment and "sustainability" and cutting energy consumption. This little story exposes that for the nonsense that it is. Nooo, let's scrap another one! It's keeping the business machine running that interests the politicians, not the environment.

Thanks TR75, but I've just checked back and it's Allegroman (who coincidentally is also in Plymouth...!!!) that you need to thank.

Without his thread about early Tourers, I'd not have known what chassis number to look for.

One thing though, the car did look strangely odd wearing an X-reg, guess you get so used to them on a 'Y' or new style (51, 02, 53, etc) plate

A truly wonderful find I still cannot understand how a car made so well and so beautifully was allowed to fail, a national disgrace, well done for saving this particular one
