A six sided 1/2 socket is a must for this job

How did hammering on an 1/2 socket go? if it failed i would suggest that you use the silverline removal bolt set as they are shallow and you can the get a socket on it with a long handle, or an aviation long ratchet spanner on it to help with leverage. You can see how the silverline will give you more access in a confined space, but i still rate Irwins the best of the bunch. 1

Thanks Arctic, I have had to move the Rover off the ramp at the moment to work on a customer's 2CV plus i have ordered the Irwin set on ebay so awaiting delivery. I have also ordered some replacement bolts from DMGRS who are most helpful people. The Silverline one looks good for tight spaces so may order that one too. Thanks to all members for their advice, hopefully will get the 75 back on the ramp next week to tackle the job.

Interesting to see how it goes, looks like I’ll be spending time filing some bolt heads!

I had exactly this problem. Access is difficult / limited. Tried most of the above tricks then bought a set of Irwin bolt removers. They are so good. Removed the rounded bolts immediately and have used them many times since with complete success. Take time and read instructions carefully. Good luck!

If anything in the automotive nuts n bolts world that is going to seize, it's going to be brake/suspension fasteners.....
So here you are boys, have a weedy 13mm hex to play with. The ones on the bottom of the hub to lower arm were absolute horrors on my 1.8t. I had to bring in some friends to help me out - many thanks to blowtorch, Plusgas, lump hammer and drifts, and the wheel of death, angle grinder. |

The six point sockets are the way to go as they grip on the flats, not the points.

Got the part number for the 13mm bolts? Can’t seem to track them down. Are they replaceable with L/R LYG500350?
