Default Plane Crashes into New York River

A US Airways Airbus A320 passenger plane carrying 136 people has crashed into the Hudson River in New York,
the Federal Aviation Administration Channel says.

Rescue boats and ferries are alongside the partly submerged Plane attempting to pick up survivors standing on the wings.

The Plane which was Flight 1549 from LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, is sinking but partly submerged the FAA said.

It is not known how the plane came to land in the river, but the FAA said it might have been due to a bird strike.

"The FAA is reporting all passengers are out of the plane, and a secondary search is underway.
...
Witnesses say it appeared the plane made a controlled landing."

US Plane Crashes Into NY River

Sky News
  • A US Airways jet with 148 passengers on board has crashed into the Hudson River in New York.
US Plane Crashes Into NY River

The plane had just left the city's La Guardia airport when it hit a flock of birds, which disabled two engines, said a US government official.

The A320 jet, with five crew, was destined for Charlotte airport in North Carolina.
There are reports of some injuries - but one passenger said he believed everyone survived.
Emergency services tried to get the passengers off the aircraft as quickly as possible.
TV footage showed dozens of them on the wings of the plane as it floated on the river.
One passenger said he thought the plane had dropped out 100ft and he had been in about 5ft of water.
The jet took off at 3:26pm local time (8:26pm UK time) and was in the air for just three minutes.
Witnesses on the ground reportedly saw a bird strike.
Passengers said the captain told them to brace for impact and then the plane went down.
The FBI said it had no information that the crash was an act of terrorism.
Witness Barbara Sambriski said: "I just thought, 'Why is it so low?' And, splash, it hit the water."
Emergency services reportedly had stretchers waiting at the riverbank to take people to hospital.
Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Laura Keehner said: "There is no information at this time to indicate that this is a security-related incident.
"We continue to closely monitor the situation, which at present is focused on search and rescue."
Former pilot Eric Moody told Sky News: "It has to be big birds to stop the engines.
"If you go through a flock of big birds it can be quite disastrous, as you can see.
"I would say that was a very successful ditching of that aircraft, if all those people got out safely.
"Whoever has flown it has done a very good job."

Looks like the plane wings have built in buoyancy designed in for circumstances like this. Lucky escape for all.
