Default CDTi - not starter motor, far worse!

So moving on from my earlier thread about changing the starter motor, I have removed the inlet manifold cover, only to discover oil and water inside.... nearly to the top of the first lower manifold port drivers side .....guess this was why I couldn't turn over the engine.. so any suggestions on what may have caused this, and whether it can be cured..
Haynes manual suggests serious coolant leak... but the water is clear, my coolant is bright pink, but who knows... car has been stood up for three months, although turned over and moved around the drive every other week. I did hear what appeared to be a bang when I last started the engine, after which it died and would not restart.
Checked the oil in the sump and on the filler cap, all clean, no sludge.. I guess there is a gasket failure somewhere??
