Default Instrument panel

::instrument panel was removed the smell of burning on the left hand side of it was really strong ,Is this a common problem as cant find another one like it on the forum posts?

In a word no.
Take it out and look for charring or discoloration on the board.

Might help to add that this car has in the past been a taxi and has all sorts of non standard wiring installed.

Can you not take out the non standard wiring and go from there? as what you are experiencing in terms of faults with this car obviously stem from the previous taxi installation.

Coincidence but I was having a trial run on removing the wood dash and notice an odd cable connected to the right side ipk plug, the insulation around the white wire (white/slate?) had been stripped and and extra cable wound together with the exposed wire and crudely covered in brown tape. This wire joined others further down, all joined in the same fashion to a 3 pin round socket on the left on the driver’s footwell. Some other wires headed up under the A post, a taxi too possibly?

Thought I’d mention it as to my mind the standard of work leaves a lot to be desired, so if yours was a taxi and the add-ons done to the same standard as mine, Brian’s comment about stripping all the non-standard wiring away makes sense.

Though I’d love to know what the white (white/slate) cable feeds and why a taxi should need it.

A input for the meter would make sense. I long ago gave up trying to make sense of the modern wiring diagrams, but I think I might have found it in my printed "Electrical Library" - white & slate supplies a road speed signal from the abs ecu.

Fuse 15 which protects the AUX power supply input to the IPK (light green and orange wire) goes directly to the IPK from the passenger compartment fusebox and feeds nothing else.

As this is the fuse which is blowing in your car, I would suggest as a quick test to make sure the wiring is ok to disconnect the IPK, replace the fuse and turn on the ignition and see if the fuse remains intact.

I've dug out a lowline IPK and I'm currently building it up as a virgin diesel unit in readiness for you

Have done that Brian and fuse stays intact. Only when ipk is connected does the fuse go. I suspect as you suggested the damage to the ipk has been done by the taxi wiring touching something it shouldn't. Kev had removed this for Alan before I had a look.

Will re check everything before we connect anything new but pretty sure the fault is in the ipk now. Very frustrating for Alan and Kev spent quite a lot of time helping Alan too.
