Default Steering wheel controls not working

Hi all ever since i bought my 03 plate 75 Club SE cdt the steering wheel controls havnt worked. The car came with a kenwood cd player which had a box connector that connected to the cars box connector. Because i like originality i sourced and fitted a symphony radio cassette unit. The cars box connector fitted straight into the back of the symphony unit. I understand the club se had a harmony unit fitted as standard but the symphony has a better sound quality. Any ideas how to get them working please
Thanks
Colin.

If the original stereo was a Harmony, the car's connector would be the 17 pin BMW connector. A Kenwood, or Symphony needs 2 X 8 pin ISO connectors.
A BMW to ISO adapter lead is usually used for that, but most only have 13 cables instead of 16, two of the missing ones are for the steering wheel controls.

If that is the case, pin 10 of the BMW connector needs connecting to pin 2 of the power ISO connector, and pin 17 to pin 3.
