Fuel pump problems on a 75 Connoisseur

I've got a 52 reg 75 Connoisseur automatic - it's been reliable and has always started first time but one day last week it wouldn't start (it was fine at 23:00 but not at 08:00 the following morning). It almost did, but not quite.

I called the AA and after some investigation, the patrolman told me that there seemed to be a problem getting fuel from the injection rail into the bores. He couldn't fix it so we towed it to my local garage. They spent hours trying to find the fault and reckon that I needed a new fuel pump and module. (Apparently when they called Rover, they were told it's a regular problem and they get "three calls a day" about it.) The parts will cost around £350 and then there's labour on top. Could it be something else? I read a pdf on the forum which mentioned a clip accessed via the back seat.

Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks in advance.

Most likely leak back into tank from fuel filter
Check under back seat LHS under cover w. 4 X 10mm bolts. Fuel filter. Placed in white plastic housing. Housing tends to come loose, and fuel pressure leaks back into tank.
If you take out, be careful with cleaning, don't break any bits (fuel sensor also sits there) and re-tightens both top plastic of housing as well as the green fuel line clip (it must click, when you put it back, ask me how I know

) Steel ring can be a ******* to get back in place!
I guess that would solve your problems.

Shouldn't be!
Something's not seated right if the ring doesn't go back on easily.
Best to mark it before removal so you know roughly where to tighten it back up to later

As Jules says a presumption that your car is a petrol derivative has been made. No definitive diagnosis can be made without knowing what engine your car has. A diesel would probably require replacement in tank fuel pump, if indeed that is the problem.

I will have a look again!. Mine was really difficult to get on! The filter housing can only go in in one position, as there is a special cut out for part of the flange, and the petrol line points the way.
As for Diesel units, I don't know them, they have never been available here, but I can not really believe that they are much different, except maybe for the filter unit itself and maybe a return fuel line.
Anyway, you know what you have so check it out.

Yes, it's a petrol engine (1.8). Does this information mean that it's still likely to be the leak back into the tank from the fuel filter?

Hmmm. I called the garage just now and they told me that they'd already checked the filter and clip and tightened it all up but that hasn't fixed it - it looks like I will need a new fuel pump and module. Any suggestions for a good priced supplier?

Maybe someone can recommend a good mechanic for Rovers in the SE London (Dulwich/Peckham/Streatham/Lewisham/Camberwell/Sydenham) area?
