Granted but the Low speed temp is fairly easy to test & it's this speed that usually fails first.
Driving up a steep hill in say 2nd gear quite slowly will get most Petrol engines on Full Speed Fan. (Watch the temp carefully though in case fan motor has lost all it's speeds!)

Jules - that was very informative data. I test drove a 1.8 at the weekend and the fan kicked in at 99 C so quite reassuring the system does waht it says on the tin!
