16' Trailers Do Fit Under 14'6" Bridges
Ah yes the train bridge in Cramlington claimed another victim this morning result 1 very buckled curtainsider trailer & a very red faced driver. I really wish I had my camera.........trouble is it's very poorly signposted & it catches out loads of drivers BUT it IS signposted so they have no excuse, there's nothing actually writen on the bridge but there's a sign about half a mile before showing an alternative route "Newcastle avoiding low bridge"
Must be a sickening feeling that though |

One of our sister company's drivers used to do a regular run to Darlington in a Transit & was given a hired in 7.5 tonner one day & made the same error at the bridge on Albert Hill in Darlo if anyone knows that bridge it's easy to see why the road actually dips down under the bridge & it looks like it's very high but it's an optical illusion.
The 2 funniest bits were when he dropped it back off at the rental place threw the keys on the desk & said "I've just brought the flatbed back from Moodys" "We dont have flatbeds" "Do you want to bet?" and the other classic was when he was hauled in for his official ticking off "Do you realise you cost me 7 grand to get that wagon fixed?" "Do you realise if I'd reported hitting that bridge I'd have cost you half a million?" |

Working for the Railways, we get lots of these, but this picture is my all time bestest one, you can imagine the driver phoning his gaffer...

I have been a victim on a slightly smaller scale.
As an inexperienced young lorry driver I delivered quite a heavy load into Denby's near Dorking. This is accessed via a narrow lane with a low railway bridge. I was very relieved when my lorry just went under as I went in. You're probably ahead of me here, but yes about an hour later and looking forward to getting home I proceeded at a healthy pace under the bridge, exiting in my now empty lorry. End result was I ripped off the roof from front to back on the wagon |
