Default Instrument cluster advice please !

Hello all,

I am about to take another 75 in px at work that I fancy to replace my Dads one with. It's an 03 con SE 2.5 auto tourer. The question I have relates to the following: A couple of weeks ago it was reading approx 25k when it had the battery replaced, since then it has read 999999 ! I have MOT's to verify mileage. Is there a procedure to reset the cluster to read the correct mileage when the battery is discharged/replaced ? The car seems to good to miss at the price as my Dad really likes the tourer (he currently has a 4dr con SE 2.5 that he's been well chuffed with). I will be getting the car in about a week so I would be most grateful of any advice on this one......

thanks in advance

Darren

Have a read of this thread Darren - not the whole lot just the last couple of pages. Similar fault as yours pops up.

Just noticed this on'tuther forum. Looks like a useful a useful link. Some suggest a system reboot. Others say it won't work. Apparently the usual cure for all the nines is a new instrument cluster, together with associated T4 costs.

David,

thank you very much for that. A couple of quick questions if I may?? How involved is swapping the clusters and do you have any idea of typical costs? Will it then show the correct mileage ? I presume the mileage is stored elsewhere - ECU possibly ? The car seems good value at 3k (demo plus one owner) and obviously well loaded being a dealer demo car.....

Or would you advise that I let it go by as his present one is perfectly good with no faults.....

thanks again

TC,

thanks - I didn't realise that it's a 'known concern' as we so often hear at work ( I am in a Ford main agent - hence the part exchanges) ..... if the cluster change is not too involved then I think I may well give it a shot.....

T4 or Testbook = MGR Diagnostic Computer

Charge to hook up to car and read fault codes for example would probably equal 1 hour main dealer labour charge

The replacement cluter has to be new ask Les at SMC trading if he has one see link at top of page. Easy to change about 10-20 mins but will need T4 to match the stored mpg and set the new cluster up otherwise it will display Error instead of mileage.

Can only use a brand new instrument pack. Attempting to use second hand gives mismatch with mileage recorded in other modules and error messages.

Brand new IPK (Instrument pack) about £350 I think. Then has to be coded to car using T4 - say another £60 .
