Cooling fan predicament-advice please
After almost suffering engine overheating when stuck in traffic and aircon failing to work when stationery, I tested the cooling fan and found it to be dead on all speeds. Tested using the 'aircon on' test and the trinary switch test. I cannot see resistor through grill so assume its a 3 speed fan.
So, called AA warranty and informed them of problem and they have arranged Nationwide autos to have the car in and investigate. However they have stated that I am not covered for faults caused by 'wear and tear'. I also have a £50 excess! I then spoke to garage and they informed me that its gonna cost £49 to have the car looked at and diagnosed, a fee they state will NOT be reimbursed by warranty company 9 times out of 10! So, with little spare cash, I am faced with the possibility of paying out £49 only to be told that the cooling fan isn't covered by my policy as its down to 'wear and tear'! I have been searching and trying to read up on this 'fan repair bodge' trick but not found much info about it. Any ideas, tips or suggestions guys? |

Thanks Stocktake.
Also, does anyone know if this fix sorts the problem if no speeds seem to be working? Or is it only if just the slow speed is dead? |

I think it may only repair a slow speed fault not sure though, and its free to try.
If you can find a working s/hand two speed they are a straight swap I am told. If you have a go, cut around the aircon pipes with a hot knife. ( it is obvious when you start to take it apart)

If you're strapped for cash I would say try the fix outlined above and if that doesn't work rather than spend £50 on an investigation spend it on a two speed fan from a scrapper. There's enough cars being written off so you should have little difficulty finding one

Hi,
nearly 40Euros for 4 brushes and a few pages from the garage-manual seems to be a lot of money! http://www.technikline.com/pd-950330...?categoryId=28 You get them for 9,5 Euros and you have to remove the bumper, the headlights and the piece of metal betweenm the bumper and the fan. The fan has 3 srews you can only open from beind (between the radiator and the fan). Then you have to open the Motor by undoing 3clamps) Replace the brushes by soldering. The you may work on the surface with a turning-machine at part where the brushes meet the motor (puh, my english is good to order a beer in a pub...). I will do the work at a car of a friend of mine in 2 weeks and then I will upload some fotos. Markus |

Got to agree with that, brushes will be of correct specification as well.

But also remember, getting that sort of work done in England is not so easy. We bred the mehcnical practical skills out of the English and replaced it with Bankers. Yes I know that there are still people with skill to operate a lathe to skim a commutator, but does anyone English actually know anyone with the skill, or the access to a Lathe? (PS please don't take this the wrong way. I know there are people out there, they are just few and far between!! |
