Default coolant help

This isn't for an mgr, but can any explain simply the differences between red/blue/pink/green coolant?

There's no spec in the manual just to use oem, which is pink, or equivalent, however as it's 35-45 quid delivered I'm trying to figure out what is an acceptable alternative.

Well if it's pink, surely that's OAT A lot cheaper to find than your quotes

That's what I thought but apparently you can't go by colour anymore. It would be a lot easier if coolant had a simple spec like oil.

Yes but it's a Toyota and none of the spares are cheap, they never are!

The ordinary antifreeze options, green or blue, have been acceptable for near on 100 years.
Unless your engine has got some new previously unknown material hidden inside (-hint-, it does not!!), then it will work for you too!!

There are persistent claims that OAT is responsible for many of the problems with silicone sealing in modern engines. I believe they are true!

As added info, I have run my Rovers (1.8T, MGF, 2.5 and V8) on ethylene glycol (green) for years.
No problem.
Just replace every two years.

Maybe but from what I've read japanese companies rule out using the older stuff, plus theirs last 10 yrs or 100k. So probably not really that expensive, if I think about it like that.

Ha ha.
A case of beer, if you manage to keep the coolant in the system for even half that time.!

And I believe they are right. There are some stories about mixtures turning into gel, but I think these are old wife tales!

But how often do you have to buy them?

Perhaps something for discussion - is it "better" to have a car that has "cheap" spare parts but they need replacing frequently (erm.. drop links anyone ) or one that has "expensive" parts but they are almost never changed?

Thoughts?

Andy.
