Today in History .
The British Navy sank the pride of the German fleet the Bismarck.
Sadly the Bismarck had sent HMS Hood to the bottom with loss of over a thousand sailors. 75 years ago today . |

Just proves the folly of war for both sides !
Grown men sending young boys to their premature deaths and for what?

Yes war is hell.
Amazingly this huge war machine was disabled by a bi-plane dropping a torpedo. It hit the rudder leaving the Bismarck a sitting duck. Last edited by Dragrad; 28th May 2016 at 01:54.. Reason: Consecutive posts - use the edit or Multi-quote :-) |

While I concur with most of the antiwar sentiments expressed here, I believe that liberty and independence are so precious that sometimes one has to make a choice whether to stand and fight or submit to tyranny.
There are many in the world who would wish to see us bow the neck to their commands and many moderate muslims are dying or being abused or tortured to satisfy their egomanical desires. I truly believe in the statement " The price of peace is eternal vigilance". |

This enabled the battleships HMS Rodney and King George 1V to catch her and bombard her to destruction, even after a heavy pounding Bismarck would not sink until the heavy cruiser Dorsetshire fired torpedos and scuttling charges on Bismarck set off. Only 3 survivors were left from HMS Hood as her magazines exploded, the Bismarck had about 2200 men on board and only about 100 odds survived, in fact some were left in the water as there was a U boat scare and the ships picking up Bismarcks survivors aborted the rescue. Heavy loss of life on both HMS Hood and KMS Bismarck.
