You have a 190, therefore you need the special cam holding tool 12R208 for the front sprockets, the rears have there own tools.
Beware of the Laser and Sealey kits as if you google them they say tool 12R208 is included - THIS IS WRONG as they are not. I have my own laser kit, and just borrow the 190 tool from my MG dealer when i need it Those belts shown in the picture above are 1.5 teeth out on the rear bank, the last belt change was carried out at a garage without the correct tools, so you are approaching this correctly, use the correct tools and you shouldn't go wrong |

Thanks for that info Phil. The more I dig here, the more i find!
The point I'm making is that if you look at the vid on the tube, it has different sprockets when compared with the sprockets on the thread that doesdn't use the tools and I'm wondering what tools fit what. They even use that vid to explain how to tell if you have the "safe" position by using those sprockets. I'm sorry if I've missed a point you may have made as I'm sure you've realised, I haven't done this job yet and I'm just doing a bit of research before I buy the tools and do it! Personally, I want to use the tools rather than go at it with tipex! Steve |

The video on YouTube is for the older kv6 engine, the laser kit 4577 has the other tools that you need for the rear sprockets.

Ah....I thought as much but I needed someone who knows about this to say so!
I have a guy who has a full set of tools including the holding tools for the 190 and he doesn't want a great deal of money for them. I'm thinking then that the engine in that vid is quite early as so far, I've not actually seen one of those. To be honest, I'm still getting my head round how these tools work.. they obviously lock the cams from the front and leave the front sprockets floating in order to get the teeth to line up just like most of the later makes, but then they are removed and the tools are placed on the rear, probably just to get the belts changed. The timing is done by the front holding tools. Cunning.. Wonder who thought all that up! Thanks Phil. I'll pop in when I'm up your way. |

So its a good idea to know that the guy before you did the job and left the timing correct. Good luck. Steve |

the actual belt change is but when it's fitted on the car there are things that have to be removed that don't have to with an engine out and certian things are harder to do while the engine is in due to poor access and they will be people on here that would have find an easier way to remove those awkward item

Oh, I agree entirely. the biggest job here is getting to the job in the first place! But if you had the engine out, you would have to do all that dismantling anyway, so hey ho, get stuck in.
If you take it to a garage you have no guarantee the mechanic will take it all off and replace everything to the standards you would yourself. My daughter has one of those Q5s and you would have thought Audi could do it right, but they didn't. Caused all kinds of problems. Steve |

Why don't you get a Haynes manual? They can be quite useful at times.
