I am not sure, but I think someone on here said that they had done something to either lift it higher out of the hole it fits in, or took off some of the shoulder to allow it to go further into the hole it fits in. Please do not do either unless you look in the search at the top of the page to find it. Try putting in ‘cam sensor’ and see if it comes up. You may have a long search. It’s to do with the magnetism of the pick up I think?.

Getting desperate now
She has started playing up when starting from cold too. I have been researching as much as I can. I am 99% sure it is the Cam sensor. When I read up on the crank sensor, it appears if that was gone she just wouldn't run.
Changing the Cam sensor hasn't worked (so far). Could anyone advise me please? If I put a washer between the sensor and the socket might it work?
Please, please help!

Our OP has a nice refined KV6 though, not a stone crusher under the bonnet.

If the old one will start the car and the new one doesn't then, assuming you have the correct part number, it sounds like you have bought a faulty part.

Putting a washer in between the camshaft sensor, might make it run slightly cooler as these start failing when hot. It will not be a long term solution, though.
I know that people have put them in the freezer for a while and get them to work.

Regarding the crankshaft sensor, I think that you can eliminate that by watching the rev counter, whilst trying to start the engine.
If the needle flickers on the attempted start, then the crankshaft sensor should be good.

All your symptoms point to a faulty camshaft sensor and, as Mike Noc says, the replacement part could be wrong or faulty.

Can you get the car scanned, ideally with a T4, to see what error codes it throws up?

Thank you so much for your kind reply. Sadly as mine is a kv6 it doesn't help
If anyone has a link to the piece where they used a washer I would be very grateful indeed. As it gets worse, the car is ever more unreliable

Thank you for your replies folks. I will try and get her to a T4 guru for further analysis
I will also try another new sensor, as you say this new one might be faulty.
Thanks again

Just as an aside, are there different sensors for the kv6? I know the replacement one looked quite different to the 17 year old original, but I don't know what other differences there might be.
If anyone has a link to the definitive part I would be very grateful

The washer spacer was something suggested for the diesel cam sensor - didn't make any difference on mine though.

If your old one works, albeit intermittently, then the new one is either faulty or the wrong part, so worth trying a known good one before shelling out on a T4 session.

Further plot deepening. I looked at Rimmers and they have two listed. Same part number but one has the suffix 'L'.
I am minded to think this might mean 'long' perhaps? As always, any ideas greatly welcomed.
