The ZT/ZTT 190 and 180 use exactly the same engine as Brian says the only difference is the engine tune.
The 190 tune caused harsh gear changes with the automatic gearbox so they detuned it to 180
The tune is different than the 177 Rover tune due to the cams

John,

Thank you for posting the MG Rover Technical bulletin for the cam timing on a ZT 180 engine.

I have always wondered how many engines have had the wrong cam timing applied to them over the years?

Tom.

Well, I did the Cambelts, Waterpump, oil & filter and Radiator change over the Easter break, took 18 hours in total over the 3 days.

Worst part of the job, the bloomin' inlet manifold!

The only tool I used was a pin to hold the engine in the safe position. This is definitely the only tool required. I used this to hold the engine in position while doing up the crackshaft centre bolt. I wouldn't recommend this if using a drill bit or something else fairly brittle instead of a mild steel pin.

When I had the engine safe pin in position, nothing lined up (see photos)! As the key to a cambelt change is not disturbing the current position I continued anyway keeping everything as it was.

Afterwards the car runs as it did before, so I have an engine that is a tooth (or 2) out, or something very odd is going on.

I didn't replace the rear cam bolts (which are stretch ones) but I have ordered some, which I will replace when......
..... I replace the thermostat. This appears to be the source of my water leak not the water pump which is why I under took the job in the first place (Cam belt needs doing in 10,000 anyway, plus car is 12 years old).

One of the breather hoses snapped too, another part Rover made from brittle plastic in its infinite wisdom. Replacement on order.

Only minor issue is the car sounds like it may have a minor exhaust blow now, it can only just be heard on tick-over though.

Phew, thank god that's over.

Ian
