Are you hitting a bump or tight turn which is causing a short or momentary disconnect issue? Is the fuse and relay for the ecu in good order?

Hi klarzy

No bumps I am sure as one journey was going north and the others south.

Will have a look at fuse and relays now.

thanks for the help really appreciated

Get it on a T4 and find what the fault really is.

Some people do post an awful lot of bad advice on here at the moment. A lot of it assuming an electrical fault.
Not necessarily bad advice, but wrong info either based on experience or misinformation in various documented sources such as Rave.

In the end all the comments lead to the right outcome and more knowledge for the collective.

If your assessment of bad advice is based on your knowledge than I suggest to share it rather than post a comment like this.

Better wrong advice that leads to investigation/knowledge than no advice at all.

Check the earth strap from the engine to the body. Mine looked fine but was totally corroded at one end - in fact I actually pulled it apart with bare hands it was so bad. I had had several starting problems and stuttering from the engine, once replaced with some rather hefty cable the problem has gone and never reappeared. Just my threepennyworth.

I had a similar problem in a Mazda. The car had to be towed to a dealership. I spent £200 on a diagnostics session and it was all clear. The problem turned out to be a loose wire to the battery. As simple as that. It is certainly worth checking out the earth strap, the abs wiring and the relays.

I mentioned the earth in post 8 but nothings been mentioned as to whether it has been checked. Always best to do the logical, simple checks first.

Hi dadragon,

Your suggestions have been taken on board as has everyone else's.
Today I have installed the well tested ECU by 'marinabrian' what a gem he is!

I also removed the battery box and checked the ABS modulator for any corrosion ect. All fine, cleaned up everything I had removed.
Tomorrow will look at the earth straps and the wiring under the under-bonnet fuse box as suggested by Brian.

The car must next go in for MOT and a major service so will talk about my mystery to them.
I did take the car into town for a fill up, round trip about ten miles, everything seemed very normal!

Kindest regards to all, your help is most appreciated John

Default Two months on!

Hi everyone,
Two months on and no repeat of the earlier "shut downs".
MOT was fine and major service showed nothing.
The garage "Gorse Motors, Nr Thetford Norfolk/Suffolk" ran a full diagnostic and came with no problems!

So it looks like an unsolved mystery?

kindest regards to all
John

You can get 'Just one of those things' faults..I once paid next to nothing for a 750iL BMW because the EML light would randomly appear and cause everything to go 'Limp home' They have SEVEN ecu's covering everything..Started with the obvious under bonnet ones, all joints clean and healthy went on to do the rest, still all clean and healthy, put them all back in and the light never showed it's ugly face again

Hi Whitevanman,

I am sure you are right. What I did mean to mention was that a cable to the ABS brake one side was repaired after the "low pad" light came on. The cable was broken but the garage was sure it would have had no effect on what had happened previously?

Kindest regards John
