Default eMac DvD player?

The kids school was selling off their eMAC OS X's for £40 last week so picked one up for the kids to mess with. First exposure to Apple Mac's and quite impressed especially Garageband! Anyway it has the front load CD-ROM but no DvD facility and I understand the best way is to attach an external player via the USB. Anyone any experience of this and what's a good setup?

You may find that it only supports USB 1.1. Have a look under the Apple Menu/About this Mac/More Info. select USB on the left. the info will be in the right pane. If it says high speed bus then it is USB2 otherwise. Firewire is the best option IEEE 1394.
Plenty of cases with firewire capabiltity. Something like this.

with a Pioneer 116D drive which is the Combo drive in most Macs.

That was just a quick search, I'm sure you can do better on the case price but the drive is dirt cheap.

The eMac's are rather nice, you bagged a bargain!

I bought some to put into a school recently(the kids prefer them and find OS X and the video/audio tools easy to use than the latest PC's they were given) and I gave my 5 yo daughter a 1.42ghz model which is quite capable of running Leopard, iTunes and the Cbeebies website. If you can bag a 1.42ghz model its the one to go for, it has the faster bus, can take 2Gb ram, has USB 2.0 and a decent video chip that supports Leopards video functions.

A quick google will turn up lots of sites with information about eMac's, this site is good and has some info and links that might be useful if you are feeling brave and want to open the unit up and replace the CD drive.
