Question So then...what do we do for a living?

Just inspired by the one of the other threads I wondered if there were any trends regarding our careers?

I was originally a car and motorcycle mechanic before starting work at the local Water Company in 1985...since then I have worked in the same industry in a variety of engineering roles and laterly as a technical training specialist for the Water industry doing stuff like Butt Fusion and Electrofusion (polyethylene Welding)

My most recent Job is Project manager for a Utility training company called (D*****p) oops...now Utilise.... I still train sometimes...it has taken me all over the UK and to paces like China, The UAE, Ireland and the US of A. its been a fascianting Career...but lots of pressure these days.

How about you folks...whats you Job history?

I served my time with Austin Rover starting in 1987. In about 1991 we also became a Hyundai dealer and in 1993 we finnished with Rover and stayed with Hyundai. I worked for that company for 12 years and got to the point where i was taken for granted and became unhappy. I left to go to the company i am with now as they were rover and i wanted to return to the brand. As i returned to the rover brand the company also became Hyundai (bonus) so i walked into a job almost as the top tech as my whole career was on these 2 brands. The company has a very good reputation so there was pressure to do well. We took on other brands Suzuki, ford and Vauxhall and it's fairly unique that i work on all brands. Every day is different as i can work on a rover then a Vauxhall then a ford. I have trained in all brands and my qualifications are :-

Apprentiship upto and including National Craftsman award
MG Rover Excellence - Advanced (top 3% at time of closure)
Hyundai master tech
Ford Senior tech
Vauxhall tech
Suzuki tech
Accredited technician (motor trade version of corgi registered tradesmen for gas)
as well as mot and thatcham approved
I think i am very lucky as this year is my 20th year in the trade and i still enjoy every minuite of it.

Mines pretty dull in comparison......started out withBT, then moved up in various companies (all telecoms) ending up as a contracts manger for a multi million pound contract. Lasted 239 days before telling them to stick it.

In the meantime, my wife bought her own florist and became pregnant within in the space of a couple of months.

So I ended up as shop manager short term...............................

7 years later after a 2nd child, she went back to the shop and I went in search of employment.

Took a job as a HATO (Highways Agency Traffic Officer), did that for a couple of years, and now I have the glorious title of "Route Steward" with responsibility for the M25........

Well I’m only 25 so mine is not really a long story, I started off working behind a bar when I left school after my A levels, then I got a job working for a company called T&S which is the head office for supercigs and dillions newsagents just doing admin work, then I took a year out and went to see the world, blew loads of my parents money, but hey I’ve been to over 20 different countries, then I came back and got a job working for the local council in there corporate services, dealing with council policy and after 3 years at university, I’m now a Project Services Manager for Central Government based in Birmingham, and they now pay me sheds loads of dosh which is always good travelling to London about once a week. Loads of fun and I love my job, basically I look at implementing showcase events for different groups to highlight a range of different issues that effect us all, the last one was a campaign to encourage kids in poor areas to stay at school or even just attend so they can get a good education. A lot of my work sees me working with all local authorities, so look out as I may be in a town near you all very soon.

Andrew

Well, after leaving school I worked on a Dairy Farm for a couple of years, followed on by more Agricultural Work.

Hurt my Back and had to find something a little less strenious, so got a job with my Mother at a Curtain Factory !! Stayed there for a while and moved on to various other little jobs.

Worked for Morrisons Supermarket as well as Safeways, then moved on to work for a Wines and Spirits Bottlers, left there became a Taxi Driver, left that and got a job as a Stores person, followed that job with a Fork Lift Drivers position for a printing firm, after that I got a position at the University of Wolverhampton, was there for two and a half years.

After that job I stayed home to look after my Son and now I work in a Call Centre......

Not very Glam I am afraid .........
