It holds the gear you are already in while accelerating to a higher speed for the automatic change up. The effect is more noticeable when the accelerator is used with, er, enthusiasm. Some of us drive with the pedal pressed only halfway down, believe it or not. But, just occasionally, I've actually seen others doing it. Shameful.

Er, no Phil. 'S' is for Sport. For Snow you must press the snowflake (in the middle) vertically downwards. And the word you are looking for I think is 'due'.

I have both 75 with automatic transmission. The snow button, what it does is it locks the overdrive. This makes it go slower from a standstill so you won't lose the initial traction needed to start moving on the snow. So it's also correct what they have indicated about stepping on the brake on downhill slopes to "activate" the engine braking, making the gearbox move from a previous high gear to the previous one.
Cheers...!!!

Reminds me of when I had left school many years ago and while I was waiting to start work as a trainee I got a job as a cleaner /delivery driver for a car hire firm for the summer.
It was a very hot day and I had driven around 20 cars mainly Ford Escorts and Cortinas: all manual. On my last trip back to the garage I was late and getting tired. Someone pulled out of a side turn in front of me so I dropped the Cortina into third and went to accelerate in order to overtake. Fine except the Cortina was the first automatic I'd driven that day....Right in front of a bus stop queue. Some wag shouted "Thanks for stopping to give us a lift but I think we'll wait for the bus thank you". I took the car back gingerly, the tyre marks were on the road for about a year afterwards! |

Did a similar thing when I was driving my friends 3500 auto. I had a the manual P6 at the time.
When I came to a junction I stood it on its nose. |
