Default Thinking of a big Cat S-Type.

I have an itch to scratch and maybe going mad at the same time, but I'm thinking about a 4.2 V8 S-type.

I've read this thread https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...ghlight=jaguar and would like some input from you peeps about 2 I've found...

Higher price, older, lower mileage, reputable dealer, warranty etc.

Cheaper, newer, clean MOT (no advisories) what to make of the dealer and terms and conditions?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Can't comment on them as I've not got any experience of them but the running gear is typically reliable. If it were me, I'd spend another grand or so and get the s type r, probably negligible running cost differences and a supercharger to boot.
They are very good value, I'd sooner have one over a 260 but I couldn't part with cash to buy one because they aren't my cup of tea.

With fuel prices where they are, I don't think there's been a better time to buy something like that for quite a while

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...cation=at_cars - Any good?

Or if you're willing to do a spot of cosmetic alteration and don't mind a high mileage:

Does have a clean MOT though.

Edit - Found one from a dealer - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/52-JAGUAR...sAAOSwePleV937

Admittedly mine was only a 3 litre. but I never really warmed to it. Easy to lose the rear end (without being silly), and certainly not as comfortable as the 75/ZT. Only Jag that I was not sorry to see go (I still have 7 others) and I part exchanged it for my monogram ZT when my mechanic told me it was starting to rot in the sill areas, where they all do. That was 6 years ago, and I have never regretted it.

All cars ever made have issues or problems. Rot, gearboxes even head gaskets. If we listened to other people's experiences on issues they'd had on any particular make or model we'd still be using the horse and cart.

I've had my 3ltr S Type for nearly 4 years, 15 years old and 62k miles. Find it very comfortable and it drives a treat.

Just do it. If you don't like it flog it.

Thanks for the replies so far.

As for the suggestion of going for the R version, I have no need of a supercharger. Heck I don't even need a v8 but the 300bhp on offer would be plenty to satisfy me. I've thought about the 3.0 V6 but feel the V8 would hold it's value better. My budget would be up to about £4.5k tops.

Markypicks, I've sent a pm.

As you will have seen on the thread linked by you I commented from the perspective of the 2.7 manual owned. I would hope the electrical controls would be less of a problem than the diesel (DPF & more) so find a good one and enjoy. Rust, rust & more rust so check sills, wheel arches & boot lip!

It was a very enjoyable drive.

Default Big Cat

They are very good cars, but as with all Jaguars, they need to be looked after, they do suffer from rust around the wheel arches, but if it has been looked after, then the owners remove the build up of muck in the wheel arches and like the 75/ZT treat them with anti rust proof in the wheel arches. Can be expensive if you visit main dealers, but a good few independent provide a decent quality of maintaining. I previously had a 2.7 XS, with the jaguar Body kit and loved it

https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...78&postcount=1

but traded it in for a much newer Jaguar XF

and am very fortunate to also own an XKR

Also Ziggy72 owns a Absolutely superb S Type R, in my opinion the best in the country, so might be worth have a chat with him via PM about the S Type V8's
