Default MGZT KV6-Rattle-Driving Me Mad!!

Dear All
I hope you are all well.
ZT seems to be going ok since its head rebuild and belts and pump change, still has a rattle, normally when stone cold over night. I suspect its the inlet manifold (I did swap this last year), the odd thing is, if I go out from work at lunchtime, the rattle seems worse! It does eventually subside once the car is warmed up.
Going to try and get another inlet manifold and go back to busking in York to pay for all the bills, I will not let this car beat me!!
Best wishes to all
Persistent Bob

Hi Bob,

As the rattle is present only after a cold start, it's very unlikely to be a worn power valve linkage in the manifold chamber.

I'd bet on a belt tension problem which is rather worrying bearing in mind your recent engine rebuild which would have included timing belt replacement.

Hi Bob did it rattle before the rebuild I suspect it did as the people that did your engine have a good reputation so don't get worried unnecessarily

Default Rattle

Thanks Simon and Dave
It did rattle slightly before the disastrous engine incident, that why I changed the inlet manifold, I have to admit it wasn't much better after the change!
It ran fine this morning on the 25 mile drive to work, but it is in open countryside so you cannot hear the rattle, in town it seems worse. It might just be me, but something isn't right, I like things to be spot on!

I'd do a good engine flush and change the oil, tappets are known to do this after a rebuild.

Could be piston slap. Not unknown with the KV6.

Indeed. Does it sound anything like this? (noise starts around the 19 second mark):

Default Tappet noise

Thanks Trikey,
This happened last summer on my wife's TF, had the head skimmed and it was fine for two days, then made a really bad noise, changed the oil and he presto noise disappeared!! It did waste 4.5 litres of fully synthetic!!

The noise was piston slap. The mechanic assured me that it was pretty much harmless and would be fine to just leave it and monitor it for a good few thousand miles more (in fact he reckoned the engine would out last me!), but I had it fixed any way (engine out, new pistons / liners etc).
