Rover 75 Steering Rack

Hi,
Took the old Rover to the garage for a knocking noise coming from the front and they advised that most of the front suspension needs replacing and it looks like DGMRS can help with most of the parts for this. However, they also advised a new steering rack.

After a quick google it looks like these may be in short supply! Any ideas where I may be able to source one of these?

I would be asking the garage why it needs a new steering rack.
Try mickyboy a dealer on the forum but let him know what car you have as the racks may vary. You can check the different models via Rimmers web site to see if they differ.
A scrap yard more then likely may be able to help but you may need to remove it yourself or try a post in the wanted section of the forum.

Might be worth getting a second opinion on that, it would be unusual for most of the front suspension to be worn at the same time and only have a single knock - if it were that bad it would rattle and clatter almost constantly, and I suspect you would have detected a general lack of stability/tram-lining on rough or cambered road surfaces.

I agree with Paul, get a second opinion, something does not sound right with the garages find? did they state what in particular is wrong with the front suspension, springs, bearings, arms,

Also what is wrong with the steering rack is it leaking, is it a gaiter split.

I also agree with all the replies above Ewan. It sounds as if at best your garage doesn't really know what's causing the knock, hence wholesale replacement of parts.

Can you tell us under what circumstances you hear the knocking sound, for example when the steering is turned to one side or when traversing a pothole?

As Arctic says, steering racks seldom give trouble other than fluid leaks. Ask for more information.

Alternatively, ask an MOT tester (not the garage you've taken it to) to check the steering and suspension. They are the most experienced with faults in this area.

As the others above have said it is very rare for ' most of the front suspension needs replacing ' if it was it would be like driving a bag of jelly.

Have they given you an itemised list of what, according to them, needs to be replaced and why and the cost, it would be interesting to see this.

Admitted at the age now of the cars, there will be some wear in many components but not necessarily needing immediate replacement, also it's quite understandable to replace a component with slight wear whilst replacing a worn component, if it will save time in the future, but a blanket ' most ', especially the rack appears odd, which if there are no leaks etc but a knock from the rack ( presuming mounting all OK ) a pair of inner track rods usually sorts that out.

As mentioned, a second opinion / estimate or two is well worth seeking.

It's easy for a garage, when stuck without a positive diagnosis, to bring the parts cannon out...............it's not them paying for all the bits.
