Hmmm.
Did your friend test more than one cylinder (and therefore ignition coil)?

Quite correct there Arctic and will blow one of the engine management fuses in the undertones fuse box

He didn't, as it happens - we were running out of daylight the evening he came round, so by the time we had checked the crank sensor, there wasn't much time for a deep dive into anything else. Certainly worth further investigation in daylight! Thanks for the reply, your help is much appreciated.
