Mine's only half the size of the one in the photo and is no great hassle to take on and off. Is that the norm for a 1.8t?

I would say that the shorter tray is normal for the turbo. My 1.8T's have always had that though the 1.8 was always a full size.

If anything I would regard one as a hindrance as I suspect it would tend to mask fluid leaks which I would be better off knowing about but perhaps I'm missing something obvious?
According to a local Rolls Royce trained engineer who until retirement worked on all cars but specialised in Ferraris, the lack of an undertray can have a serious impact on airflow and cooling.

Default Under Tray Removal & Fitting.

Car on ramps.
1

Four front 8mm fixing removed.
2

Next i remove the four centre fixing 10mm
3

3a

That then leaves the tray hanging between the front being inside the front bumper, and the rear still held up by the two buckle turn fixings.
4

Lower the tray to the floor as i slide from under it on my back.
5

Reach down and pull tray out from under the car.
6

Tray set to one side out of the way.
7

I then set about changing out the front ramps for my higher ramps, as these cannot be driven up.
8

Jack each side up and slide the higher ramps in place.
9

10

Then i raise the rear of the car to put the smaller ramps under the rear wheels, as i will be working under the car this weekend.
11

Checking for up and coming mot.

Thanks everybody for the numerous suggestions. I have decided on a mongrel solution garnered from all the replies. A box on either side of the jacked up car. A plank or piece of 4"X4" laid across the two boxes and the underbody thingy is balanced on this with the front end tucked under the front wing. you can lie under this and take your time and perhaps also saying a prayer to the car god. His co-operation is always welcome. An awful thought --- maybe he's female or worse still gender fluid!
