CDTi - not starter motor, far worse!
So moving on from my earlier thread about changing the starter motor, I have removed the inlet manifold cover, only to discover oil and water inside.... nearly to the top of the first lower manifold port drivers side .....guess this was why I couldn't turn over the engine.. so any suggestions on what may have caused this, and whether it can be cured..
Haynes manual suggests serious coolant leak... but the water is clear, my coolant is bright pink, but who knows... car has been stood up for three months, although turned over and moved around the drive every other week. I did hear what appeared to be a bang when I last started the engine, after which it died and would not restart. Checked the oil in the sump and on the filler cap, all clean, no sludge.. I guess there is a gasket failure somewhere?? Last edited by ninaandphil; 25th June 2016 at 13:32.. |

HGF on the diesel is pretty much unheard of - it sounds like the car has sucked up the water at some point and 'hydrolocked'.

Hi Matt... spent a fortune on the car, including new shocks and top mounts from you recently, and other bits..... the car has gone nowhere, it has been off rd sorn whilst I have been working on it .. absolutely no chance of water ingestion in the last 3-4 months, so it must be internal leakage, are there any other potential causes? I have turned over the car regularly, but it has not moved from my drive in this time, it has always started without problems until this week.
Or can water be sucked in and remain in the engine for some time, causing later problem? Seems unlikely, but what do I know.. Last edited by ninaandphil; 25th June 2016 at 15:59.. |

Trikey, Pete, Matt.... thanks for the advice. I've had the glow plugs out now, but still cannot get a turn of the engine, even to expel water from the cylinders. Seems like the bang I heard was something breaking.. piston rod, not sure really. I can't even rock the car backwards or forwards in gear, seized solid. So I am sadly on the verge of giving up and breaking the car.

Why not pick up a replacement engine? Shame to scrap the car having spent money on it.

Hi Mike, considering my options this morning post yesterdays doom! I suppose I could look at this option, do I need to ensure I get a 131 engine, and will the Ecu / remap and all continue to work as a plug and play?
Thanks, Phil |

Any M47R engine will do just use the ECM already in the car and it will be plug and play. If you get one out of a Freelander TD4 there are a few bits to swap over from your engine.
