The introduction of speed cameras was, for the main part, due to motorists being disillusioned with the then-burgeoning numbers of traffic policemen 'targetting' them! Various daily newspapers were vociferous in their campaigns to get bobbies doing 'real' police work and away from the 'persecution' of motorists.

So, in a way, we got what we asked for.

I understand they are banned in several EU countries, no doubt the UK will eventually join in.. I don't condone speeding or dangerous driving, but if speed traps ( mobile cameras) are set by 'road safety' or police by parking in lay bys, hidden behind hedges, or around sharp bends, then clearly these are not in place to warn motorists or discourage them, they are simply positioned to maximise revenue. Therefore I feel I have the right to use radar detection equipment to notify me of their presence... and as you may guess, I had an incident of the above a few yrs ago, which I challenged and after much correspondence including my request to know what revenues were raised by said camera, which my county council declined to provide as it was 'not in the public interest'!!!!! The fines were 'dropped'.... MMmmmm??????

Unfortunately that's not an excuse, nor is ignorance.

Government doesn't seek perfection, they seek obedience (as in sticking to the rules which may not be perfect)

Try telling a magistrate you didn't know 4 pints would send you over the limit

Sorry Sir, but I only had a few, nobody is perfect.........

Stop making excuses, there is this gauge in front of you that does display speed.....................

Besides, living in France, you have to agree the UK isn't that bad

The UK is terrible which is why I'm in France.-

Please have a look at my post 39. There are lots of reasons why people pass speed cameras over the limit. In fact thousands.

Heaven forbid you ever have a really serious happening in your life followed by immediately having to drive a car or ride a motor bike you would understand what I mean by distraction.

Under times of extreme stress you would NOT be thinking --Speed Limit---

Unless of course you were one of Issac Asimovs Robots.---

I think there is a limit, however those scenarios are pretty extreme and unlikely in general driving.

If those are the reasons, then they could apply to drink driving as well.

Maybe you're taking this a bit too far.......

There is no excuse for speeding and as for the list:-

Quote:
You've just been told you have cancer.
Speed and crash to avoid a slow dead

Quote:
You just had a phone call to say your wife has been involved in a car crash.
Speed and crash before you get there

Quote:
You've just been told by your girlfriend she doesn't want to see you again.
Get a new one

To be honest, I don't have an issue with camera' s being hidden, but I do have an issue with there placement.
Near where I live there is a single carriageway road between Peterhead and Fraserburgh. For some time there has been an issue with young drivers trying to break a speed record between the two towns. (I believe they had the time down to 9 minutes) on the road there are two villages, one accident prone crossroads and one y junction. So where are the four speed camera's?
Well none of the above danger areas, but all where they might be difficult to spot

The overwhelming number of drivers on Britain's motorways are not only bad at judging distances they are **** at driving period, they drive too fast, break late, tail gate, are discourteous, just because you been given the standard BMW 118d as a company car, doesn't mean you are in fact capable of driving the thing, then you get the morons in their 320d and A4,who are under so much pressure to get to their next appointment, the list is endless. In any case the motorways are not fit for purpose in 5 years time the speed limit will be irrelevant as we will not be able to drive past 40mph due to there being just too many cars on the road. If you want to see chaos and confusion with a good dose of stupidity, take a spin on the M1 J 29 to J19 any morning or early evening.

If you want to really learn to drive on the motorway, then France is the place, that is where the men are separate from the boys.
