In tank pump gone again...?!
Hi
Yesterday, when starting my daily shed, it took an extra second to start then normal. Fuel was low but not low enough to stop it from starting (above the red marker). 20 seconds later, the car cut out and refused to start after. I could hear a lot of gurgling when engine is first started and then when engine is off. These symptoms match the symptoms I had just four months ago when my in tank pump failed. I got my Jerry van and walked to the local petrol station. Got some diesel and put it in the car. I let it prime a few times before attempting to restart it and then it fired up and has been fine since. I first replaced the in tank pump in July 2016 with a brand new one. It then went again about 4-5 months ago. This was replaced by a good used pump as funds were tight at the time. It now appears to have gone again...? If this is the case, I will buy a new genuine one this time. I’ve not had much luck with fuel pumps...

fuel
Why don't you just keep fuel above 1/4 tank level instead of fitting all these pumps

Your good used one was more than likely on its last legs when you fitted it - no way to check it properly without dismantling and checking the state of the commutator, and they aren't built to be taken apart.
Was your replacement in 2016 OEM or a cheapie? |

Hi Ravinder,
That’s not good to hear, two pumps in such a short space of time, in my experience a leading cause of fuel pump failure is running the fuel tank low. ... Running such a vehicle out of fuel once can permanently damage the fuel pump. When the fuel level is low, the pump has to work much harder to produce the same pressure. This is because the reduced fuel weight no longer pushes fuel into the pump. Mick

Thanks for the replies. The new one I bought in 2016 was one of Matt’s ones from DMGRS. Not sure if this is genuine or not...?
I think my under Bonnet one is currently working as I can hear it fine. It is quite loud though but it’s been like that since I bought that about two years ago. I’ll buy a new original Rover old stock one this time as I believe these can still be had.

It is "OEM-Q". So I supect it is neither original nor OEM. The original pump part was made by VDO and I believe Jules used to sell them. May be worth checking with Jules if he still has supply. |
