Its predicted that diesel drivers will be offered incentives to scrap their vehicles or face stiff new taxes, dont they reckon by 2020 will be the start.

Many years ago one of my former colleagues was trying to wind me up about the then 12 year old 48k mile Carina (with battered drivers side) I bought with for £450, 12 months mot and 9 months tax. He stopped quite suddenly when I asked how much his 2 month old mk3 standard fiesta cost him ( popular?) per month. 0 deposit, £199 per month and 1 year free tax. I explained that after 2.5 months of his payments he could have had mine, or after 6 months of his payments, he could have bought mine, taxed it, insured it and not have to watch me overtake him on the motorway as he tried to pull away :P

I would imagine that the taxation will only apply to new cars at the time of the introduction, rather than old cars. What may happen though is local taxes, like London's congestion charges, or other restrictions, as Oslo had recently. Although they did have a reversal.

exactly lol, perhaps an incentive to remove certain existing (over a certain age) cars from the road? Instead of trading it, when you do decide to change, sell it to the government, via an approved scrapyard and then use that cash as you see fit. Either by buying another new or used vehicle or buy lots of beer instead lol. With the proviso as with the last one, that you have owned the car for at least two years. This will hopefully prevent the second hand car market from imploding, and make people see out at least some of the useful life of an older car, therefore helping reduce pollution of building a new car too.

The original scrappage scheme was also supposed to increase British made new car sales, but was not limited to British built cars. ooops!

I would imagine you are correct with the policy being introduced on new cars, this could be why the diesel scrappage scheme for the older diesel motor may just happen.

I can see a "charge" being made to use diesels in citys, such as London, but why are the local councils still buying diesel small vans and diesel company cars?

I've not driven my diesel into London since the summer, when my FREE TRAVEL pass arrived.

Perhaps FREE TRAVEL FOR ALL is the way forward to reducing pollution in all citys.

Nice thought, but I very much doubt it.

I can't see a compulsory scrapping scheme coming into play. we are a nation of car enthusiasts that take pride in driving classics and modern classics like the 75 ZT.
I would very much expect restrictions coming in regarding how many miles a year and where and when you can drive. this will encourage people to use more eco friendly cars or bikes as a daily drive.
the diesel engine can never be replaced as things are at the minute.

Or how about refusing to drive your diesel in those places that put a price on you driving in certain areas? If I still worked in Brum, and they put a charge on driving in the area I worked, I am quite sure something would be done by those that it impacted. People accept anything from government and local councils these days. How about protest marches for no charges? Seems that we could learn something from those that have been demonstrating against the Donald. Just a thought.
